Soups are one of my most favorite meals. I find them nourishing, comforting and always a crowd-pleaser in my family. We all love soup! Good soup can easily make the best of what is offered seasonally so you never get bored of all the variety of flavors and textures.
Homemade stock and bone broth is more nutritious, economical and tastier. Once you get a few tricks down – it’s very simple and easy too! Broth and stock are also great items to stock your freezer – so make a lot and save time later. Store bought broth is not simmered long enough to extract all the components of this healthful food so homemade broth is key.
This class will cover step-by-step, the method to make this healthy soup along with learning why and what health properties this broth contains. Resources on where to get high quality bones, meat and herbs will be discussed.

According to the September/October 2011 Well Being Journal’s “Bone Broth Delivers Minerals & Macro Nutrients” article, these are the minerals and nutrients in bone broth soup:
- Lots of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium!
- Gelatin: Long slow simmering of bone broth makes it a gelatinous substance. Gelatin helps with digestibility, soothes the intestinal lining, a can help decrease respiratory problems, allergies and colic. It is known for providing therapeutic support for those with ulcers, diabetes, muscle diseases, bone problems, infections and even cancer.
- Amino acids glycine and proline: Glycine helps with liver detoxification, wound healing and any condition requiring rapid growth such as pregnancy.Proline is part of connective tissue and is an important amino acid for those with tissue and joint problems.
- Hyaluronic acid: This acid is a “colloid”, meaning it attracts gastric juices to surface of food, helping with digestion. Most foods repel gastric juices, impairing digestion. This problem can cease to exist if more raw, fermented foods or bone broth is added to cooked meals and sauces.
- All the components that make up connective tissue: The most important component is chondroitin sulfate. This often makes up a popular, expensive supplement used for joint problems. However, if you make homemade bone broth soup, you can have chondroitin sulfate for free!
